Something Worth Hearing – Episode #009 – Alberta separatism is impossible & a right-wing win-win

Kyla Lee joined Paul Henderson on the Something Worth Hearing podcast for a conversation about Alberta separation, constitutional law, Indigenous consultation, and why the legal path for a province leaving Canada is far more complicated than many people realize.

The episode focused on whether Alberta can legally separate from Canada. Kyla explained that while separation is theoretically possible, the practical and constitutional barriers make it extremely unlikely.

“The process is so complicated that the odds of them actually being able to hit all of the things that they would have to hit successfully are slim to none.”

She also explained that Alberta could not simply choose to leave Canada on its own, particularly where Indigenous treaty rights may be affected.

“Alberta just can’t unilaterally decide to up and leave Canada without actually meaningfully involving First Nations in the process.”

Kyla also discussed the Clarity Act, the need for a clear referendum question and clear majority, and the constitutional amendment process that would require support well beyond Alberta.

The conversation offers a clear, practical explanation of why Alberta separation may be politically useful as a talking point, but legally and constitutionally difficult to achieve.
