This week on Weird and Wacky Wednesdays: Somebody’s Been Sleeping in My Bed

Last week our subjects typed their plans into a search bar and left a record for the police. This week’s subjects left no search history at all. They let themselves into homes that belonged to other people and then made themselves comfortable. The homeowners came back, or woke up, and found them there.

Anyone who grew up with the story of Goldilocks will recognize the pattern. The difference is that the three bears never had to call 911.

Driving While Black: What the Luamba Case at the Supreme Court Could Mean for You

In January 2026, the Supreme Court of Canada heard arguments in what may be the most important traffic-stop case in a generation. At the centre of it is Joseph-Christopher Luamba, a young Black man from Montreal who says he was pulled over nearly a dozen times in the 18 months after he got his driver’s licence, always without a real reason.

The Court has not yet released its decision. When it does, the ruling could reshape what police across Canada, including in British Columbia, can and cannot do when they decide to stop a driver.

In this episode, Kyla Lee from Acumen Law Corporation examines the tension between an accused person’s right to disclosure and the privacy interests of third parties whose personal information may be contained in digital evidence. The case involved forensic images of computers held by police that contained information relating not only to the accused, but also to third parties who had used the computers or communicated with their users. It raised an increasingly important question: when potentially relevant evidence contains another person’s private information, how should courts protect that privacy while preserving the accused’s right to make full answer and defence?

When Justice Runs Out the Clock: The Jordan Decision and the Saskatchewan THC Case

In April 2026, a Saskatchewan court upheld the stay of proceedings against Taylor Kennedy. Kennedy had been the first person in Saskatchewan ever charged with causing a death while driving under the influence of THC. A nine-year-old girl, Baeleigh Maurice, was killed crossing the street. The reason the case collapsed was not the evidence. It was time. The Crown had run out of it.

For anyone facing a serious driving charge in British Columbia, this case is not an oddity. It is a reminder that timing is one of the most powerful variables in your defence, and one that most accused people do not realize is working for or against them from the very first day.

Pandemic Delays: Cases That Should Have Gone to the Supreme Court of Canada, But Didn’t!

Welcome to “Cases That Should Have Gone to the Supreme Court of Canada, But Didn’t!”

In this episode, Kyla Lee from Acumen Law Corporation examines the continuing impact of COVID-19 on the right of accused persons to be tried within a reasonable time. The case involved an accused who argued that pandemic-related delays contributed to a breach of section 11(b) of the Charter. The trial judge treated 60 days of system-wide COVID-19 backlog as an exceptional circumstance and deducted that period under the Jordan framework, leaving the net delay below the applicable 18-month ceiling. The Ontario Court of Appeal upheld that result.
