This week on Weird and Wacky Wednesdays, we look at some unusual 911 calls involving drunk drivers. Sometimes the most unexpected sources of betrayal come from your own inner circle or even your own conscience. This week we see moments of surprising self-awareness and an act of familial justice. The call that seals your fate could come from anywhere. So, buckle up as we consider three stories that beg the question: who’s really got your back?
Lakewood Woman Turns Herself In
In a tale of unmatched honesty or perhaps inebriated confusion, a woman from Lakewood, Ohio, found herself in a predicament of her own making. It all began when she called 911 to report a drunk driver. She had incapacitated her car in some manner and apparently no other solution came to mind but to call the police and report herself for DUI. Her attempt at responsible citizenship quickly turned into a full-blown self-report. Calling the police on yourself isn’t the smartest way to deal with your mistakes. My advice would have been to jump in an Uber instead of calling 911. Read the full story here.
Englishman Dials His Own Doom
This one comes straight out of England, where a man made an outrageous phone call while intoxicated. After becoming too drunk to drive, he decided to call the police and turn himself in, stating that he was too drunk to handle his vehicle. Police found him parked on the side of the road and, after conducting a breathalyzer test, confirmed his alcohol levels were well above the legal limit. Talk about a guilty conscience! The decision to stop driving was certainly the right call. Calling the police was not the right call, but you would think there would be some bonus points awarded when it’s time to go to court. Daughter Turns In Dad
Florida always brings the drama, and this story is no exception. A 12-year-old girl didn’t hesitate to call 911 on her own father after witnessing his dangerous behavior behind the wheel. Dad had been drinking, was weaving all over the road, and ignoring his daughter’s pleas to pull over. The young girl took matters into her own hands, reporting her own dad and ensuring that he was stopped before he could cause harm to himself or others. It’s a little heartbreaking. She may have saved them both and some other road users from some tragedy. Sometimes loyalty to safety outweighs loyalty to family. Learn more about her quick thinking here.
What got me thinking of 911 calls was the recent Vancouver Island case where a sober driver was called in by another driver and the caller was the one ultimately issued an IRP. If you’re planning to drive, keep it sober, because whether it’s your family, your stupidity, or just bad luck, the truth will likely catch up with you.
