Weird and Wacky Wednesdays: Volume 137

This week on Weird and Wacky Wednesdays, we look at a feminist approach to testing the waters of COVID-19 restrictions. Then, we examine the case of a man who provided an unusual but compelling excuse in response to a noise complaint. Finally, we consider the case of an animal cruelty investigation with an unusual twist.

Follow the jump to learn more about this week’s weirdest and wackiest legal cases from around the globe.

That’s One Way to Equality

One of Quebec’s responses to COVID restrictions has been to impose a curfew from 10:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m., with the hope that not allowing people out at night will reduce the amount of COVID-19 transmission in the community. But there are exceptions, including for walking a dog.

Well, one Quebec couple decided to test the limits of this by taking the “dog” for a walk. But the dog was not an animal in the truest sense. Instead, it was her husband. She was ticketed, notwithstanding the awesome creativity, and frankly, feminist nature of it.

What’s in a Name

City living comes with its challenges, including the risk of noisy neighbours who will not play their music at a reasonable volume. Such a challenge recently led to a strange case in Ohio, where a man who had been the subject of a number of noise complaints made an unusual claim in his defence.

The man, appropriately named Mr. Rock, claimed to police that he was practicing his singing because he was about to go into a studio to record an album. When that defence didn’t fly, he argued that there is no way to properly play Led Zeppelin quietly.

And he’s… not wrong. But he was still subjected to a warning about disorderly conduct.

Manatee Mangled

Police in Florida are searching for a culprit who defiled a manatee. According to Florida laws, it is illegal to harass or injure the sea creature. This applies even if you are a major supporter of a certain US president, twice impeached by Congress.

Yes, apparently some asshole carved the word “TRUMP” into the algae growing on the back of a manatee. So the poor creature itself was unharmed, but it has no choice but to swim around endorsing a tyrant.
