It gives you wings but can it also give you a fail? That is, can you fail a breathalyzer with Red Bull?
This is the first in a series of experiments that will test various energy drinks and find out Can You Fail It. That means can they give a false reading on an approved screening device (ASD) commonly known as a breathalyzer.
Red Bull is high in caffeine and many people drink it to feel more energetic and alert. But should you think twice about drinking it before you hit the road? If you have Red Bull in your mouth when you get pulled over by a cop, could you find yourself in trouble?
In “Can You Fail It?”, we put everyday household items to the test to ask, Can You Fail It? Red Bull is the first in our series on energy drinks. We wanted to know if there are traces of Red Bull in your mouth when giving a breath sample for an ASD test, could it fool the device’s sensors?
For your information, a blood alcohol content (BAC) reading between 0 and 0.049 will see you a pass on a breath test. A reading of 0.05 to 0.79 is a “warn” while 0.08 or higher is a “fail”. In order to investigate can you fail a breathalyzer with Red Bull, we tested the energy drink in the Acumen Labs. Watch the video to see the results.
So far we’ve tested all manner of household items to find out if you can fail a breathalyzer with them. To see some of the previous items we have tested in the name of science, take a look at our YouTube playlist.
