When you receive a ticket, the biggest concern most people have is the points associated with the ticket. Those points can contribute to increased insurance premiums and to driving prohibitions. But is there a way to get rid of the points from a driving record?
In BC, the points stay on your certified driving abstract forever. However, when requesting a copy of your driving record, typically you are receiving a five-year record. That means, after five years, the tickets no longer show on your driving record and cannot be used against you for insurance premiums or prohibitions.
Once the points are on your driving record, whether you chose not to dispute the ticket, missed the dispute period, pled guilty in court, or were found guilty by the Justice, those points are on your driving record. ICBC does not have a way in which drivers can pay off their points or give up their license for a period to get rid of the points on their driving record. The only way to dispute those points is to dispute your violation ticket and attend the court hearing.
