This week on Weird and Wacky Wednesdays, we look at the case of an extremely unusual criminal response to the coronavirus outbreak. Then, we look at one way to get stung after a DUI crash. Finally, we examine just how far distracted driving can go in a very unusual case.
Follow the jump to learn more about this week’s weirdest and wackiest legal cases from around the globe.
Desperate Times Call for Desperate Crimes
When there’s a public health crisis, the best plan of action is to rise to the occasion. Find a creative way to make the public health crisis work for you. And, if you’re a criminal, find a creative crime to make the public health crisis profitable.
Okay, don’t do the last thing.
Otherwise, you might end up like some would-be enterprising armed robbers, who stole hundreds and hundreds of rolls of toilet paper in Hong Kong. This is amid panic-buying in light of the coronavirus spread.
This may be the firs time we hear about a heist of toilet paper at knifepoint on this blog series, but if this public health emergency continues, it may not be the last.
Unusual DUI Consequences
Don’t drink and drive. Or do drugs and drive.
Not only will you lose your vehicle and your license, but you may face some unexpected consequences. Take this Kentucky couple, who were driving down to a local watering hole for a swim. Apparently, they did this after consuming some alcohol or drugs. After crashing their car, they were stung hundreds of times by angry bees. The couple had crashed their car directly into a beehive.
I guess it’s fair to say that the consequences of DUI sure can sting!
A New Distracted Driving Low
I am generally not a proponent of the messaging that distracted driving kills as many people as is claimed. Picking up your phone to check your text messages at a red light may be dangerous, but it’s not deadly.
But, like any right-minded person, I am a proponent of reasonable limits on what you can do with your phone while driving. Because there are cases where a person can be distracted by their device behind the wheel and cause serious consequences.
Take, for example, this Texas case. Tragic consequences. But how they got there is among the more unusual distracted driving events I’ve ever seen in my career. The driver apparently lost control of their vehicle and caused a collision because he was more focussed on watching pornography on his cell phone than driving.
I mean, a simple distracted driving ticket is not going to get to the route of the problem there. But this is certainly a new low in distracted driving behaviour on the road.
