Kyla Lee in Vancouver is Awesome: Is it legal to keep backyard chickens in Vancouver?

Some Vancouver residents can keep chickens in their backyard but they may want to reconsider buying a hen house for now.

The City of Vancouver permits residents to have a maximum of four hens, over the age of four months on a lot (no roosters). Owners must register their hens, get permits, and notify the city if they decide not to keep them. 

The Animal Control By-law does not allow residents to keep any other fowl in their backyards. However, a spokesperson for the city tells V.I.A. that it is reviewing the by-law to include more specific details on what bird species may be kept in a backyard coop.

People may also want to carefully consider the risks of handling chicks and wild birds transmitting viruses.

Jerome Deluca, who lives with his wife in Coquitlam, said they’re willing to make the master bedroom of their home available for two fans who wouldn’t otherwise be able to go because of the cost of accommodation.

“My wife just wanted to do something nice for somebody,” he said. “I hold the basic philosophy that trust creates honesty.”

Kyla on CTV News: Time limits meant to speed up justice have halted hundreds of criminal cases in Canada

When police turned up at Melanie Hatton’s home in Kelowna, B.C., in November 2021, she says they found her in the bathroom covered in blood, her then-husband Jeffrey Maclean was standing over her “in an aggressive manner.”

She describes a gruesome scene in a court filing, with blood from her head wound allegedly smeared on Maclean’s mouth from his whispering in her ear. The filing in a civil lawsuit against Maclean says he told a 911 operator his wife was “bleeding like a pig.”
