This week on Weird and Wacky Wednesdays, we look at how comfortable we have become with working from home… and in some cases, a little too comfortable. Then, we examine the most extreme way you can protest a store’s request that you wear a mask inside. Finally, we look at what not to do if you’re wanting a COVID-19 test.
Follow the jump to read more about this week’s weirdest and wackiest legal cases from around the world!
Things That Should be Unsaid
With the new era of working from home, social distancing, and telephone court appearances it seems that many are forgetting how we conduct ourselves in courtrooms. And while self-represented litigants should be given a bit of leeway in this regard, one would expect that lawyers do not forget the basics too easily.
I’m talking about the real basics. Like, you know, wearing clothes or actually getting out of bed. But apparently even that is too tough for some lawyers.
A judge in Florida has had to twice reprimand lawyers who were appearing before her in court, by video. The reason? One male lawyer thought that it was acceptable to appear in court without a shirt on. Another female lawyer figured that she could conduct a hearing from under her covers, in bed.
Look, if you’re going to work from home at least make the part of you that faces the camera look professional if you’re appearing in court.
Did Not Wawa Wear a Mask
A lot of people are acting like total buffoons over basic requests that some businesses have, such as to wear a mask or gloves, or to respect social distancing in the store. But one man in New Jersey took it a lot further than that.
After entering a Wawa store, the man was asked to wear a mask. Rather than politely decline and leave, the man instead decided to start screaming, flailing about, and generally acted like a doofus. But he didn’t stop there. After telling another customer that he was going to bash them with a pipe, the store called police.
Apparently he was serious, because after he was arrested and subsequently released, the man drove his car to another Wawa, and engaged in effectively the same conduct… this time with an actual pipe in his hands.
Naturally, he is now facing a whole slew of charges. Probably would have been easier just to put the mask on, in retrospect.
Expanded Testing Doesn’t Mean This Testing
Since the COVID-19 outbreak, people have been crying out for expanded testing for coronavirus in the hopes of having a better idea about where the virus is in our communities. And there have been incidents of people asking law enforcement to assist them in getting a coronavirus test.
But most people do not request the type of test that Shawn Salmen allegedly requested.
Ms. Salmen, who is apparently a psychiatric nurse, is said to have driven herself to the police station in a sweaty and paranoid state. Upon her arrival, she presented herself to the police and demanded that they test the methamphetamine that she took for COVID-19.
Police officers at least partly obliged, searching her vehicle for the drug and patting her down. At this point, they found more drugs and she was arrested.
So here’s some free legal advice: if you’re worried your drugs have been contaminated with COVID-19, don’t take them. I can’t believe this needs to be said, but don’t ask the police to test them for you.
