How Long is Ignition Interlock Required in BC?

In British Columbia, an ignition interlock device (Ignition Interlock) is often required for individuals convicted of impaired driving or other alcohol-related incidents that have been added to their driving records. These can include 24-hour driving prohibitions, Administrative Driving Prohibitions, and Immediate Roadside Prohibitions.

The Ignition Interlock requires drivers to blow into a breathalyzer before starting their vehicle, and it ensures that the driver is not under the influence of alcohol.

The length of time that an Ignition Interlock must be installed in your vehicle varies depending on the number of offences or prior prohibitions.

There is a “free pass” so to speak for the Interlock if you are facing a first instance of alcohol-related driving or a criminal conviction. This is because you only get 6 Remedial Program Points for a first incident, and this is not enough to trigger a referral to the program.

The length of the Ignition Interlock requirement is determined by the number of Remedial Program Points on your driving record. The BC Government publishes a helpful matrix on their website.

For repeat offenders or those with severe driving records, the duration could be extended up to two years or more. The duration is generally determined by your driving history, including the number of convictions or suspensions and whether you have previously been required to use an Ignition Interlock.

It’s important to remember that the interlock requirement is not just a punishment — it’s designed to keep the public safe and reduce the chances of repeat offences. Drivers who fail to comply with the Ignition Interlock program or attempt to tamper with the device can face additional penalties or an extension of the requirement. In addition, multiple failed readings on the Ignition Interlock will also trigger extensions of the time required.
