Weird and Wacky Wednesdays: Volume 320

You’d think that the people we rely on to enforce the law would set a higher standard for morality, but this week’s Weird and Wacky shows us that police officers are no more immune to temptation than anyone else. Whether it’s stealing cheddar—both the money kind and the literal cheese kind—these stories remind us that officers, too, have desires to have more, and sometimes, they take it too far.

Crime Stoppers, More Like Crime Starters

In Memphis, an officer assigned to Crime Stoppers—an organization that helps track down criminals—was ironically involved in some criminal activity of her own. Arica Hutchison, a police officer with 17 years on the force, figured out a way to manipulate the Crime Stoppers rewards system to pocket some extra cash. By falsifying tip reports, she managed to steal over $18,000 in reward money, partnering with a person referred to only as “KB” in federal documents. Her scheme wasn’t foolproof, though, and once investigators caught on, they witnessed “KB” picking up the illicit payout. Hutchison was charged and sentenced to six months in prison, proving that no good deed—or crime—goes unpunished.

Toronto Officer Arrested for Alcohol Theft

In a recent incident that’s still making headlines, a Toronto police officer with 18 years of service was charged with theft after allegedly stealing three bottles of alcohol from a store. The officer walked in, picked up the bottles, and left without paying, according to Toronto police. It’s unclear whether he was on duty at the time, but he’s now facing a court date in November. He’s also been suspended, but of course, with pay. It seems even those who uphold the law sometimes want a little something extra to sip on without the bill.

The Case of the Stolen Cheddar

And if you thought “cheddar” was just a slang term for money, let’s go ahead and get literal with it. In Germany, a highway patrol officer found himself in hot water after an overturned truck led to an unexpected opportunity. Tasked with securing the scene of the accident, the officer noticed a refrigerated container filled with delicious cheddar cheese. Instead of just doing his job, he helped himself to 180 kilograms of it—about 400 pounds of cheddar! That’s a lot of cheese. The stolen cheddar was valued at around $595, but the officer’s price was much steeper: he lost his job and his appeal to get it back.

Police officers are supposed to protect and serve, but as these stories show, they’re human too—prone to the same desires for more money, more booze, and more cheese. Whether it’s manipulating Crime Stoppers, stealing alcohol, or grabbing a truckload of cheddar, this week’s Weird and Wacky reminds us that nobody is above temptation, not even those who wear the badge.
