This Week on Weird and Wacky Wednesdays: Bad Driving Never Stops
Spring is here. It seems a few folks often mistake the seasonal buzz for a good time to make some uniquely bad decisions. This week we’re sticking with the realm of bad driving decisions that remind us that foolishness on the road is alive and well.
First Date Turns into High-Speed Chase
Just in the last few weeks a 20-year-old man in Tyneside, England, decided to start his love life off with a bang—or perhaps a crash. He was trying to impress his date. He picked her up in a BMW with a defective rear light and began what was presumably meant to be a romantic evening. Unfortunately for him, police noticed the issue and attempted a routine traffic stop.
Rather than pull over, he hit the gas and initiated a full-blown high-speed chase through North Tyneside. What followed was a multi-vehicle collision involving five police cars. By the time the chaos ended, seven officers had sustained injuries, and the scene looked more like an action movie than a date night.
The driver did not hold a valid licence and had no insurance, was arrested and pleaded guilty to dangerous driving and other offences. Still, he had no driving record or criminal record. His sentencing is set for May, but it’s safe to say that romance has taken a back seat.
Another Zoom Court Hearing While Driving
In May 2024, a Michigan man appeared virtually for a court hearing over a charge of driving with a suspended license. The twist? He was actively driving during the Zoom hearing.
Court footage shows the man logging into the remote session, phone mounted on the dash, while navigating traffic. The judge, clearly astonished, asked him if he was indeed operating a vehicle. The man confirmed, seemingly unaware of the irony or impending consequences.
Upon realizing what was happening, the judge immediately revoked the man’s bond and ordered him to report to jail. It was later revealed that he had never held a valid driver’s license—not suspended, just nonexistent.
He has since obtained a legitimate license. Apparently he learned something from the experience.
Stealing an Ambulance to Attend Court
In October 2024, an Oklahoma man took the concept of “do whatever it takes” a little too literally. Scheduled to appear in court on charges related to a stolen vehicle, the man found himself without a ride. Rather than miss the hearing, he made a bold choice: he stole a pickup truck belonging to an ambulance service and drove himself to the courthouse.
The audacity of the move didn’t go unnoticed. Once he arrived, authorities promptly arrested him and tacked on additional charges, including motor vehicle theft and unauthorized use of emergency services property.
Online reactions ranged from disbelief to mock sympathy. Some users questioned how desperate someone had to be to commit another crime just to show up for a previous one. Others suggested the justice system should “at least give him credit for showing up.”
And that’s this week in absurdity. Whether fleeing the police, Zooming into court behind the wheel, or committing grand theft for punctuality, these drivers found a way to stand out, just not in the way anyone wants to.
