Self-driving cars are already operating around the world — and even in parts of Canada — so why not in British Columbia? This is VANCOLOUR Mo Amir speaks with lawyer Kyla Lee (Acumen Law) about what’s stopping autonomous vehicles from being legal in B.C., what changes the government would need to make, and what could happen if drivers try to use self-driving features today.
“I think we’ve seen historically, BC has always been very behind the eight ball when it comes to technology and the Motor Vehicle Act and I don’t think there’s enough of a hue and cry from the public for Waymos when we already have a very active ride share industry. We already have taxi companies. We’re only very new in British Columbia to having rideshares available across the province… so bringing in something like Waymo with a lot of unanswered safety questions is not something I expect the province to do for quite some time.”
