Kyla Lee on Chek News: MLAs, criminal lawyer express concern with ‘Xavier’s Law’

The family of the young boy killed while rollerblading outside his home on a rural road in the Cowichan Valley Aug 25, was at the legislature Monday to hear the second reading of a bill created in his name.

For criminal lawyer Kyla Lee, who specializes in driving offences, the lack of appeal process to police delivering a driving suspension is especially concerning, as is the power the changes would give police.

“Because there is no opportunity to assert any defence, it’s unfair,” said Lee. “And the government owes people more than just to unfairly give police the power to be the judge, jury, and executioner.”
